“Former New York Gov. David Paterson and wife separate”

by Nathan’ette Burdine-Follow on Twitter@nbnylemagazine

According to the New York Post’s “Page Six” article, “Ex-Gov Paterson, wife split,” former New York Governor David Paterson and his wife Michelle Paterson are separated.  The New York Post “Page Six” reported that the couple has been living in separate homes, for a couple of months, and they have not officially filed for a divorce.  According to the New York Daily News’ Kenneth Lovett and Jonathan Lemire’s article, “Former Gov. David Paterson and wife Michelle have split after 19 years of marriage,” David Paterson’s friend stated that he wasn’t surprised to hear that the couple had gone their separate ways.  Lovett and Lemire quoted the friend as saying, “It’s been a long time coming.  It’s just one of those things.  It’s unfortunate, it’s tragic, you pray for them-but it’s not a surprise.”  Michelle Paige Paterson was asked about she and her husband’s separation.  Lovett and Lemire quoted her as saying, “it’s nobody’s business.”  The New York Post’s “Page Six” reported that Michelle Paterson is searching for a publisher to publish her tell-all book about her life as the former governor’s wife.

David Paterson became the governor of New York after a scandal forced his predecessor, Eliot Spitzer, to resign.  Spitzer was accused of frequenting a high-end escort service, Emperors Club VIP.  The scandal resulted in Spitzer having a short, less than two year, term as the governor of New York.  Due to Spitzer’s scandal, questions began to arise about whether Paterson would bring the same type of unwanted attention to the Office of the Governor.  Paterson sought to ease any concerns the public had.  So he called a news conference to disclose his past indiscretions.  During the news conference, Paterson revealed that he and his wife had sought love in the arms of another but managed to find their way back to each other.  But within two years of his tenure as the governor, there were allegations of misbehavior.

One situation involved a woman who accused Paterson’s top aide of beating her.  According to the New York Daily News’ Kenneth Lovett’s article, “Paterson told two female aides to contact alleged domestic violence victim Sherr-una Booker: Source,”  Sherr-un Booker was dating Paterson’s top aide, David Johnson.  It’s alleged that on the night of Halloween Booker and Johnson fought in their apartment.  There were also allegations that Paterson had a conversation with the woman, which resulted in the charges being dropped.  Lovett stated that Booker did not attend her court hearing after she spoke with Paterson.  As a result of Booker not showing up for her court hearing, the court dismissed the case against Johnson.  Paterson denied the allegations.

Another incident occurred with a New York woman.  Marvin Scott, of WPIX, reported in his article “Source:  Looming Paterson Scandal Involves Affair with New York Woman” that Paterson was caught in the closet getting a little too comfortable with a woman.  Scott reported that the source of the allegations was the “unhappy” wife of Paterson’s aide.  Scott also reported that soon after the alleged incident, Paterson and his wife made the decision to have the state police removed from the governor’s mansion.  Paterson and his wife stated that the decision was the result of the couple wanting more privacy.  According to the New York Post’s “Page Six”, the former governor and his wife have one son, who is 18.  Michelle Paterson has an older daughter, from a previous marriage.  David Paterson is a political talk show host on WOR News Talk Radio 710.  The show is called “The Governor David Paterson Show.”  The show is aired Monday thru Friday, from 4PM to 6PM.
